PRAMBANAN TEMPLE
Believed to have been built during the Syailendra and Sanjaya Dynasty in the 700s AD, the Hindu Roro Jongrang temple complex in the Prambanan area is a contrast to Buddhist Borobudur temple although similarities abound. The temple was rediscovered in 1733 in ruins abandoned among vegetation. Growth was cleared from 1855 to 1937 revealing the stone groupings. By 1953 about 240 temples had undergone restoration. The complex made of three concentric squares with connecting gates. The outer square has no temple. Inside the middle square are 224 temples in four rows. Sixteen temples anchor the center. The main temple features four portico entrances, each enshrining a different Hindu deity : Ganesha , Shiva , Durga and Agastya.

BOROBUDUR TEMPLE
Borobudur, Indonesia’s most famous temples has been described as a ” hill crowned with Rows of cones ”. What appears to be cones are stuppas and domes arranged in seven rows or levels , topped by the great stuppa in the center. Viewed from the air , the temple complex appears as a Huge ’’ Mandala ’’ the symbol for the complexities of the cosmos .
Borobudur has five square terraces with passages and carved stone relieves winding their way around and up the seven levels. Each level depicts a certain stage of life and describes the story of Buddha’s life on his way to the enlightenment or ”Nirvana”. More than 500 statues of Buddha adorn the temple . Many of the final levels , are encased in the lattice work, bell-shaped stuppas. These levels inspire serenity and peace , regardless , of the visitor’s beliefs. The views of volcano Mt Merapi , distant banana plantations shrouded by morning mist , and expansive lands is captivating. Sunrise is the best time to experience Borobudur. Climbing the edifice in the day time heat can be sweltering. The The grounds close at 5 pm. Borobudur is estimated to have been built around 800 AD. It was neglected and given over to decay with the fail of the Mataram Kingdom about 919 AD. Buried by volcanic ash , jungle and time, it was rediscovered in the 18th century. It was Sir Stamford Raffles who first made restoration attempts. Large scale restoration began in the early 1900s to safeguard the temple. It was not until a Belgian expert came to Indonesia at the government’s request in 1956 that UNESCO took an interest in the monument . Preparatory work for restoration began in 1963 and UNESCO gave full support to Indonesia’s plea for assistance in 1968.

The first option is walk through a jungle trek surrounded by Jati woods, paddy fields and palms trees, and the second is raft against the river currents up the Oya River. Due to our limited time, we will choose the second option. Upon reaching the waterfall, the silence shrouding the wilderness is broken by gushing water pouring down onto beautiful rock formations. Take a leap off the boulders into the clear waters for a refreshing dip! Our next destibation is Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran (Ancient Volcano), the active volcano around 60 million years ago. Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran is one of the oldest volcanoes in the Central Java region. Its unusual shape may be due to the fact that it was once an undersea rock which emerged above the surface from a volcanic eruption. Standing 700 metres above the Gunungkidul countryside, this two-peaked mountain surprisingly only requires about 60 to 90 minutes of trekking past exotic rock formations, native inhabitants and narrow stone walls, just like a scene out of 127 Hours. Enough with daytime attractions, there are many more sights to see in Yogyakarta after sundown. One spot you shouldn’t miss is Bukit Bintang at Gunung kidul’s Pathuk Hills.
